Forex

Forex is the foreign exchange market on which currencies are traded against each other to exchange rates that vary continuously.
http://www.forexavis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/forex_coin.jpg
The word "Forex" is a contraction of the words Foreign Exchange.
Economic Importance
 This market, global in nature, is the second largest financial market in the world in terms of overall volume, behind the interest rate. However, it is the most concentrated and the first for the liquidity of the most treaties, such as the euro / dollar: the average daily volume of trade was in 2007, 3210 billion USD, an increase of 71% volumes compared to the previous study in 2004 (to nearly four thousand billion dollars (four billion) daily). All figures below are from the three-year study on the foreign exchange market by the BIS (Bank for International Settlements)
The average volume is as follows:

1 005 billion in spot transactions,

362 billion in futures and

1 714 billion in swaps
almost solely in OTC transactions,
Transactions in volume were:

43% between banks;

40% between a bank and a fund manager or a nonbank financial institution;

and finally to 17% between a bank and a non-financial

and also individuals that use the platforms of the banks
To provide coverage for their clients, 24 hours 24, each bank has a large trading room on three continents. In a team located in Asia or Australia succeeds another located in Europe and finally a third located in North America, and so on.
However, despite this world and this time spread between continents, a substantial part of market activity is physically located in London.
According to the latest report of the BIS as of 2010, trading on the foreign exchange market increased by 20% since 2007 to reach 3.981 trillion dollars. The United Kingdom and the United States remains far ahead of trade, with more than 36.7% of market share to 17.9% for London and the United States. France is far behind, with only 3% of world trade, a significant decline since 1995. In addition, the vast majority of transactions are speculative (and do not last more than 7 days) and not commercial.History

Floating rates and fixed rates
It should make the distinction between so-called floating currencies and fixed currency called. The rate of a currency is fixed arbitrarily set by a state (indexed on a major currency in general as the euro or U.S. dollar) and can be amended only by a decision of that State. The rate of a floating currency depends, in turn, only to market fluctuations, he suffered just the influence of supply and demand.

Major currencies like the euro, the U.S. dollar, British pound, Canadian dollar ... are examples of floating currencies. The so-called exotic currencies such as the Chinese yuan, are examples of currencies at fixed rates.

Skype

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/fr/thumb/6/69/Skype_Logo.svg/612px-Skype_Logo.svg.pngSkypeSkype is proprietary software that allows users to make phone calls over the Internet. Calls from user to user are free, while those to fixed telephone lines and mobile phones are charged. Among its additional features: instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.Skype was founded by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis in 20031. It was developed by programmers Ahti Heinle, Priit Kasesalu and Jaan Tallinn2. The three Estonians were already behind the KaZaA software. With the expansion formulas ISPs offering unlimited free phone to many destinations, the value of Skype is losing some strength. One of the original project name was Sky peer-to-peer, shortened to "Skype". But as some domain names were already associated with the term "Skype", the founders eventually decided to abandon the R final3.

HistorySince 2007, the software offers fee-based services expanding the possibilities. SkypeIn allows to be called from any landline or mobile phone without using the software, provided that the phone is in one of 25 countries desservis4. Also, some subscribers can call from his computer to a landline or mobile, for are very modiques5. If an Internet connection is usable, Skype can be substituted in almost all situations, in fixed or mobile phone.
On May 10, 2011, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Skype for $ 8.5 billion in cash, debt incluse6, 7.
On 22 August 2011, Skype announced the acquisition of U.S. company GroupM (en), specializing in communication solutions between private groups on mobiles8.
The original and free offersSkype allows free calls only between two computers or devices with Skype and connected to the Internet through a microphone and speakers or a headset or telephone connected to the computer (eg via USB). It also features basic instant messaging allows users to communicate textually and to transmit files.
Video conferencing is possible since January 2006 and the release of Skype 2.0 for Windows.
Skype has become a voice communication tools most widely used computer as well as Windows Live Messenger, although posing problems for interoperability (mutual exclusivity of the protocol and software), in addition to privacy concerns (safety by darkness, intrinsically unverifiable).
A version of Skype is also available on the PlayStation Portable since February 2008.
Telephony service Skype has also been used from mobile phone (wireless network and / or mobile) with software developed by Skype or Fring before Skype Fring makes it incompatible with his service.
Skype was released in March 23, 2009 for the iPhone and iPod touch.
It was released in December 2009 for Nokia (Symbian S60) and then in December 2010 for Android (OS 2.2) and then for the Blackberry. Initially, only subscribers to Verizon Communications American network could use Skype on their Blackberry or Android. This restriction was lifted for systems above the Android version 2.1 in October 2010 but to use the WiFi network (not GSM antennas) but never to this day for the Blackberry. You should know that the future of Microsoft operating system, Windows 7 Phone, officially work on Nokia phones, and Skype (Microsoft) has partnered with Facebook in order to counter the Apple (FaceTime) and RIM ( without support Skype, VoIP). Google only seems to provide an alternative to Skype with Android, Google Voice, and the acquisition of Motorola. For unknown reasons, the use of service software Fring Skype on mobile is no longer possible.
In some countries, the government (Egypt) or the owners of mobile phone networks forbid the use of Internet telephony is to say all the communication protocols for voice (VoIP, Skype, Jingle).
In France, following a ban by the owners, the use of telephone services based on Internet Protocol (VoIP) from a mobile wireless possible before now became possible on the mobile network after a specific subscription (offer high-end). Whatever the network, it must be compatible with VoIP (g WiFi network and telephone networks 2G).

A 4.3 "screen for iPhone 5?

A few days before the official announcement of the iPhone by Apple 5, it is normal that the web goes crazy. Thus, according to the cnet site, the next iteration of Apple's mobile inherit a screen of 4.3 ", stamped QHD, and able to offer a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels.

If they will clearly be very cautious on the subject, the fact remains that the thing seems quite likely, the supposed first protective shells of the mobile being more "broad" advertised.

Google + share circles, it is possible!

Google + did more to change over. Now, the service allows you to share your circles of contacts as you wish. However, be aware that the names of the circles that you share will remain confidential (not for third parties to see that you had such a circle called "stalker people").

The function is trying really useful for you to build circles consisting of people with common interests, that you can offer to share ... (photographers, fans of comic rage, or whatnot).

Google celebrates 13 years

September 27th is the birthday of Google. 13 years since the King of the Internet has decided to come out of his hole. In short, if you do not come back here of course the epic Google (not that we have other fish to fry, but almost), we note nevertheless that the service offered since 2003 a Doodle dedicated to each their birthdays.http://www.journaldugeek.com/files/2011/09/Googles_13th_Birthday-2011.jpg
Good by cons, it would be almost difficult to understand why Doodles in 2003 and 2004 have been launched on 7 September, before being posted on 27 September the following year!

Google plus launched officially

Google+ was officially rolled out by the Search engine Giant Google Inc. Google will now get a chance to overtake the existing Social Networking giants like Face book and MySpace. Vic Gundotra headed this one year old project of Google+
Google plus limited invitations:
Google plus has not been made available to everyone on the web. It has been made available to a very limited circle, who in turn can invite their friends. There are several interesting features of which a few are similar to Face book and a few others are entirely new. Let’s now take a look at them.
Noticeable changes in Google & Google plus:
Google which recently announced the plus one button which is akin to the Face books like button has changed several of its existing features. Google tool bar has changed colors from grey to black. Google has also made sure that you can access all of their products from the menu bar. Some of the other interesting features to be noticed are
1.The STREAM which is much similar to the Face book News feed has got much better options for the users like sharing their photos, links and videos.
2. The navigation strip has got a new notification system which switches from Black to red when some new updates are there for the user.
3. Google friends circle also allows the user to add users to circles and anything that goes on within a circle never reaches outside.

iPad 2: Steve Jobs unveiled the new Apple tablet

After months of rumors about the new version of its touch pad, Apple has unveiled the iPad 2 under the leadership of Steve Jobs Himself.

The iPad 2 is greatly about him prior to launch, and a large part of the presentation only confirmed many rumors circulating for weeks about the second version of the tablet's best-selling worldwide . Finally, one of the biggest surprises of the keynote which lasted a little over an hour is the presence of Steve Jobs for the post of master of ceremonies. The leader Apple has wrung the neck of some rumors that just hesitant to call it "dying" following the announcement of his departure on sick leave.

We suggest you find below the record achieved in this live keynote.

Steve Jobs is finally, albeit sick, which comes into play.

For the traditional introduction, the history of Apple CEO to take this event to take stock of iBooks, particularly suitable for the iPad. The apple would have sold "100 million pounds in less than a year." Signing a new contract soon enrich the catalog of 17,000 new books.

The first generation iphone was in turn sold 15 million copies between its launch in April 2010 and the end of 2010, and annual sales of $ 9.5 billion and 90% market share. And Steve Jobs to name an officer of Samsung, who said that the tablet has sold 2 million copies.

The App Store would record 65,000 applications dedicated to the tablet from Apple. This is an opportunity to launch a pike competition, indicating that only a hundred tablets dedicated to Android applications are available on the Android Market.

HTC Touch

Get used to new-fangled touch screen phones popping up like chic geeks at an LG Prada giveaway, thanks to the iPhone. HTC entered the game officially on June 5, 2007 with their showing of the HTC Touch. This is a Windows Mobile Professional (aka WM6 Pocket PC Phone) with a screen that's not only stylus-friendly like all PPCs, but finger sensitive. The screen requires a firmer touch than prior Windows Mobile devices, so if you get one, don't be shy-- press firmly for best results.
The Touch uses a difference kind of touch screen to achieve finger-friendliness, especially gesture-awareness. It's not a multi-touch display like the upcoming iPhone and you can use a stylus, again unlike the iPhone which needs a human touch to work correctly.
HTC Touch
In conjunction with the finger-friendly screen hardware, HTC has created software that's easy to operate by finger, using tap and gestures. HTC has created a special home screen and an application that provide large, touchable targets; and in fact HTC has written their own touch screen driver. Here's the challenge, HTC can't re-write the entire Windows Mobile operating system to make it finger-friendly and gesture-aware. We'd have to leave that up to the folks in Redmond who author the OS. So you won't see a major transformation of the Windows Mobile 6 we've come to know and (err, love?). The Programs and Settings groups look and work the same. So do IE, email, contacts, calendar and solitaire. You'll face the same stylus-sized scroll bars and tiny 'x" close box up top.
HTC Touch Today Screen
The HTC Touch Today Screen, which reminds us of Spb Mobile Shell.
So what is different? There's the Today theme with quick access to an application launcher, the weather and a listing of calendar events. More interesting is the swipe action: swipe your finger from the bottom of the display to the top to bring up a spinning 3-sided cube (OK, not really a cube since there are only 3 sides, but you get the idea). Swipe from right to left (or left to right) to move through these faces. One has a palette of user-assignable images for your contacts. Put your favorite folks' photos in their, then tap on the picture to bring up their contact info in the address book. No, it doesn't dial them, you have to then hit the call button at the bottom of the screen. Flip your finger left or right to move to the next face of the "non-cube" which is an application launcher. The third face is for multimedia: HTC's music player (which unfortunately doesn't support as many file formats as Media Player Mobile), Photos (this launches MS' Picture and Videos app) and Videos (this also launches MS' Picture and Videos app).
Swipe from the top of the screen to the bottom to hide the HTC UI. You can swipe up to bring up the HTC UI from anywhere, even inside an application. Swipe down to hide it again. Cool.

HTC Touch Today Screen
Speed dial.
It's all very clever and pretty, though I'm not feeling it improves ease of use all that much since the special user interface doesn't extend beyond the Today Screen and the cube-launcher application. The on-screen keyboard is still the tiny Windows Mobile variety rather than a specially created one (or licensed 3rd party full screen keyboard) with larger keys that would make SMS possible via finger. So be prepared to whip out the stylus for text entry. And again, HTC isn't the author or owner of the OS, so there's only so much they can do. Phones like the Prada and iPhone have an easier time since their OS and UI were written together, allowing the touch metaphor to be pervasive. The HTC goodies work well and are easy to get the hang of-- good going there. And you can use the finger swipe to bring up the HTC cube when in any application. But HTC, why don't they work in landscape mode? That's right, there's no gesture support in landscape mode, so you can't bring up the cube-launcher and its finger-lovin' goodness. The touch screen has more glare than a standard PDA screen, so we had to tilt it for best viewing under sunlight.
Features at a Glance
Now that we've covered the touch screen and UI, let's get down to the basics. The HTC Touch runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional on a 201MHz processor with the standard 64 megs of RAM and 128 megs of flash ROM. It's an unlocked triband GSM phone with EDGE for data. The first version released will be triband 900/1800/1900MHz, which is better suited to Europe and Asia than the US where AT&T uses the 850MHz band heavily (T-Mobile uses 1900MHz, with only some 850MHz roaming). The was first released in Taiwan (HTC's home) in the summer of 2007. HTC promised a US triband version with 850MHz by the end of 2007 but it never materialized. The remarkably small Touch has WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a 2 megapixel camera and a standard QVGA resolution display. The HTC Touch is available in two colors: black and wasabi green.
In the Box
The HTC Touch comes in an elegant and hefty black gift box. Slide off the outer sleeve and lift up the box's cover to reveal the phone nestled between earbuds on a faux suede textured foam surface (they're going for that iPod and Sony packaging high). Underneath you'll find the standard HTC USB connector world charger with Asian prongs and no prong adapter (some vendors may throw one in and the US version should ship with US prongs), USB sync cable, spare stylus, a neoprene-ish slip case with soft material inside, HTC's usual thick manual, a thinner getting started guide and software CD.

Design and Ergonomics
This is a beautiful and small phone. It looks elegant, extremely modern and sexy. Did we mention it's small and light? Check out the comparison photos of the Touch and the original Motorola RAZR V3. The Touch has the same rubbery soft-touch finish as the T-Mobile Dash (aka HTC S620) and Wing: it feels great and helps keep the device securely in hand. The matte black finish does show fingerprints, but not as much as glossy phones. A chrome strip wraps around the edges of the phone, again making for a great look. The device is made of plastic, including the chrome trim. The curved corners and bottom taper make it feel natural in the hand and there are no edges to catch on pants pockets nooks and crannies. At 3.95 ounces (112 grams) and 0.55" (13.9mm) this is the smallest Windows Mobile Professional phone on the market.

There are relatively few controls (despite the touch screen, we'd like more). There's a 5-way directional pad below the display which works well and easily, the power button up top (takes some effort to press, and that's a good thing), the camera button and a volume slider with a center ridge for better grip. Two Windows Mobile softkey buttons the d-pad, and that's it. No OK or Windows Start Menu buttons, no voice command button-- nothing. This adds to the Touch's minimalist design but it means you'll be missing a few keys that speed up interaction with the device.
HTC Touch
HTC Touch
The battery lives under the back cover, and the entire cover slides off, rather than just a section. You slide upward in the direction of the camera lens, and we found it very hard to get off with the exception of one staff member who made it look easy. Alas, the rest of us couldn't master the trick. Though the SIM card and Micro SD card slots are under a pop-out section of that chrome trim rather than under the battery, unfortunately you'll still need to remove the battery cover to open that long chromed-plastic door. The door fights with you a bit as you try to access the slots, but we hope its rubbery-plastic mounts will withstand a few years of fighting.
The screen is bright and sharp, though it has more glare than other Windows Mobile Professional and Standard phones. The rear-firing loudspeaker is decently loud and sound through the included headphones is excellent for music playback.
Phone Features, Reception and Data
The HTC Touch is a triband 900/1800/1900MHz GSM phone that's unlocked for use with any GSM carrier. The phone lacks the 850MHz band used heavily by AT&T in the US and by T-Mobile for roaming service, but HTC tells us a triband 850/1800/1900MHz version will be out by the end of 2007. We have to wonder why it isn't quad band, though; global travelers will be at a disadvantage with a triband phone. As with most recent HTC-manufactured phones like the Wing and the Cingular 8525, call quality is excellent and the volume is average by GSM standards. Though not deafeningly loud, the speakerphone's quality is good through the small rear-facing speaker.
The Touch has Cyberon's Voice Speed Dial, but there's no hardware key assigned to this function, and the only user-assignable button is the camera button (which has only a press but not a secondary press-and-hold assignable application). Voice Speed Dial uses voice tags rather than true voice recognition, but it's very accurate and works with Bluetooth headsets and car kits. Like all Windows Mobile 5 and 6 phones, the Touch has call history, photo caller ID, and supports call waiting, conference calling and flight mode. For data speeds, the Touch got an average of 85k on T-Mobile US. You can also use the phone as a wireless modem for a notebook over Bluetooth, though EDGE speeds aren't as compelling as 3G.
Horsepower and Performance
This isn't the Touch's strong point: the 201MHz Texas Instruments OMAP 850 feels underpowered. This CPU has been used widely on MS Smartphone/Windows Mobile Standard devices, and overall it's a good fit for that platform. It's also been used in older Pocket PC Phone Edition PDA phones such as the T-Mobile MDA and Cingular 8125 as well as the new T-Mobile Wing, and it felt a bit slow but usable. It's even slower on the Touch, perhaps due to the demands of the touch interface. Quite often we though we hadn't had success touching an icon when the problem was really a long delay before the device responded by opening a window or launching an application. We found ourselves tapping and waiting quite a bit. Video playback of very low bitrate WMVs that even an 201MHz MS Smartphone / Windows Mobile Standard Edition could handle floundered on the Touch. For example, we tested two WMV files, one a short 420kbps flick and the other a 301 kbps movie and both dropped enough frames that playback was about 10 fps. Rebooting the phone and running no other applications other than Media Player Mobile improved things, but realistically it's not practical to reboot the phone every time you want to watch a video.
HTC Touch
Top view.
HTC Touch
Bottom view.
The Touch has the standard 64 megs of RAM (used like RAM in your PC) and 128 megs of flash ROM (for storage). Of those, 20.8 megs of RAM are free at boot and ~ 32.4 megs of flash memory are available for storage. You can further extend storage using the included 1 gig Micro SD card. Like the Wing, the Touch is SD 2.0 compatible which means it should support SDHC cards greater than 2 gigs in capacity though we don't have one of those to test yet.
Camera
The 2 megapixel CMOS camera with fixed focus lens takes acceptable photos, though not as good as the HTC TyTN (Cingular 8525) 2 MP camera. Given how little room there is inside the phone for camera hardware, we're not surprised that image quality took a hit compared to its much bigger brother. Images suffer from excessive foreground sharpening (so much so that detail is actually obliterated) that jars with un-sharpened background areas and creates a sense of limited focus. When resized down to VGA or 800 x 600, photos look decent but they still lack natural detail and contrast and white out add harshness to the images. Images sometimes have a purple color cast, as you can see in the photo of the dark gray buddha to the right.
sample photo sample photo
The camera can take photos at a maximum of 1200 x 1600 pixels, with lower resolutions available that are suitable for Today Screen backgrounds, MMS and caller ID. There are 4 quality settings, center and average metering options, a shutter sound that can be turned off, a self-timer and more. There are two video modes: standard and MMS. Standard video resolutions are unambitious: 128 x 96 and 176 x 144, but they do look decent, albeit small. Standard video mode supports H.263, MPEG4 and Motion JPEG file formats. MMS video supports H.263 and MPEG4 and offers the same resolutions as standard video. The camera has a self-portrait mirror but no flash.
WiFi and Bluetooth
The HTC Touch has 802.11b/g WiFi. WiFi worked reliably for us on our encrypted 802.11g network and range was good for a Pocket PC phone (despite the phone's small size). Data speeds averaged 1097 kbit/s, which is middle of the pack for Windows Mobile devices. The WiFi status control panel applet shows current SSID, mode (Infrastructure or ad hoc), Tx and Rx rates, BSSID, channel and signal strength. You can set the amount of power the WiFi radio consumes using a 3 position slider, set up LEAP and secure certificates.
HTC Touch
Left side.
HTC Touch
Right side. The SIM and MicroSD card slots are under the middle section of the chrome trim on this side.
Microsoft's Bluetooth stack and fairly plain user interface handle Bluetooth connections for the Touch, like all recent HTC phones. It has Bluetooth 2.0 and supports most common profiles including serial port, FTP, HID (keyboard and mice), headset, hands free, DUN (dial up networking for using the phone as a wireless modem for a notebook or desktop), and A2DP Bluetooth stereo. We tested the Touch with the Plantronics Discovery 655 and the Samsung WEP-200, and both worked well with good voice quality and and volume. We tested A2DP using the Plantronics 590a Bluetooth stereo headset and when we paired it, the Touch asked if we wanted to use it for stereo, handsfree or both. We selected "both" and all controls worked properly. Audio quality was very good, with clear stereo separation, strong bass and non-harsh trebles with plenty of volume. Very nice.
Battery Life
Here's where the Touch makes up for its weak CPU performance: battery life is superb by Windows Mobile Professional standards. The phone lasted 3 days on a charge with moderate use (about twice as long as the HTC TyTN/Cingular 8525) and longer with very light use. HTC claims 5 hours of talk time and 200 hours of standby and that's reasonably accurate according to our tests (we got 4.6 hours talk time). Standby was right on target. Given the wide range of things you can do with Windows Mobile phones, it's hard to describe an average usage scenario, but we tested the phone by making calls, listening to MP3s for an hour each day, watching a 2 minute video each day, looking up calendar and contacts information, checking email manually 8x/day and surfing the web over EDGE with Bluetooth left on at all times. WiFi will consume battery life faster, as will streaming media, though given the Touch's weak video playback performance we don't foresee many folks watching hours of video on the device.
Conclusion
The HTC Touch is a beautiful, very small PDA phone, something we just about never get to say. It's the perfect phone for style conscious buyers who need a PDA's features and advanced functions, but don't want to carry an ugly brick. However, those who text or email frequently won't be happy with the tiny on-screen keyboard and (very functional) handwriting recognition. The Touch isn't meant to compete with hardware-keyboarded PDA and smartphones like the Treo 750, Cingular 8525, T-Mobile Dash or BlackBerry 8800. And while the touch user interface is a step in the right direction, it's really just one application launcher rather than a pervasive change to the phone's interaction on the whole.
Pro: Beautiful, very light and very small. Touch screen is a step in the right direction. Excellent music playback quality through the included wired stereo headset and through stereo Bluetooth headphones. Very good battery life by Windows Mobile Professional standards. Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi 802.11b/g keep you connected and WiFi helps with the lack of 3G.

Official: Nokia N9 will not be sold in France

First Impressions
Compared to all other smartphones available today, and even those of Nokia, the N9 is like a breath of fresh air. It is not bright, it is not black and there is not an aluminum strip in sight. Nokia has packaged the components in a polycarbonate body unibody (116 x 61 x 12 mm 135 g), which makes it slightly rubbery to the touch and which apparently created less interference with the air inside the phone.
There are no navigation buttons, MeeGo works through different gestures. There are nevertheless essential physical buttons for volume and power on the right spine, and the jack on top.
With the Nokia N9 finally built a decent smartphone with components. The Nokia N9 runs on a 1GHz Cortex-A8 OMAP 3630 with 1 GB of RAM and a graphics processor PowerVR SGX530. It will be available with two storage capacities: 16 GB and 64 The N9 is also equipped with an 8 megapixel camera with flash and Carl Zeiss optics. The picture quality should be equivalent to the Nokia N8.

To view the photos you take, Nokia has integrated its N9 3.9 inches AMOLED screen format 16 / 9 and resolution of 854 x 480 pixels, Gorilla Glass with treatment to prevent scratching. The result is quite impressive, blacks and the colors were very well made on the prototype we had the chance to see.
In addition to the NFC chip that is inside the N9, there are the traditional wireless connections: 3G, Wi-Fi (a / b / g / n), Bluetooth and GPS. The NFC chip would not support future projects contactless payment according to CNET Australia, it would simply be able to communicate with other devices equipped with NFC to initiate such a multiplayer game or pair of Bluetooth products.MeeGo
This operating system is surprisingly minimal and strongly resembles IOS and Android. When you unlock the smartphone, you see first the application menu, a long list containing all the installed apps. If you drag your finger to the left you will see the list of notifications unified, revealing your recent calls, messages, emails, and updates to Facebook and Twitter. If you slide your finger to the right from the application list, you will have a page displaying the windows of all running applications. And that's all. There are no widgets, no option to add more screens, no sizes for shortcuts and no customizable wallpapers.

After spending so much time to customize Android smartphone, this approach seems restrictive at first, but we're very quickly. All major applications are at the top of the list, making them easily accessible. Nokia has integrated Facebook and Twitter MeeGo inside, so you do not need to use a separate application for access to their duties. MeeGo users can go to the Ovi Store - soon renamed Nokia Store - to fill with apps, and from what we heard, it will be possible for applications to deliver live information on the screen notifications.

A Fun Facebook Timeline Profile Mash-Up

Dan Tisy is a very unique Facebook user, not because he was an early adopter of the timeline profile Facebook introduced, but because he has multiple personalities — ten, to be exact.
Tisy is not a sufferer of extreme schizophrenia, however: He is actually a mash-up of the names and profile pictures of the 10 people who make up the digital creative crew at McCann Erickson Tel Aviv in Israel.
The name Dan Tisy was made up by combining the first letters of the McCann employees’ names, and content in Tisy’s biography is a mixture of content from all of their Facebook profiles. The profile picture is a collage of the digital creative group’s 10 faces.
Credit for the Dan Tisy timeline profile goes to vice president of creative Nir Refuah, copywriter Danna Blum, and art director Yatir Kaaren.
If anything, the Dan Tisy profile is the tip of the iceberg; Facebook’s new timeline is inspiring developers of image-related applications to concoct tools for creating nifty cover imagery and organizing photos within the new layouts.
Readers, have you tried timeline yet and if so, what do you have going as a cover image?

REPORT: Longest Facebook Sessions Are In Singapore

Facebook users in Singapore spend the most time on the social network each time they begin a session, while those in Brazil tend to hang around for much shorter times, according to the latest international study on the use of social networks from Experian.
The U.K. research firm examined social network usage in eight countries. The average time per Facebook session ended up as follows:

  • Singapore: 38 minutes, 46 seconds;
  • New Zealand: 30:31;
  • Australia: 26:27;
  • United Kingdom: 25:33;
  • France: 21:53;
  • United States: 20:46;
  • India: 20:21; and
  • Brazil: 18:19.
However, Brazil performed strongly when the same eight countries were analyzed in terms of percentage of Internet visits going to social networking sites, while the opposite was true for the United Kingdom:
  • Brazil: 18.9 percent;
  • Singapore: 16.4 percent;
  • United States: 15.4 percent;
  • France: 15.1 percent;
  • India: 14 percent;
  • New Zealand: 13.9 percent;
  • Australia: 13.1 percent; and
  • United Kingdom: 12.2 percent.
Other Facebook-related findings from the Experian study:
  • Facebook is cutting into Orkut’s lead in Brazil. The latter still tops that country in terms of social network market share, at 43 percent, but Facebook picked up 16 percent from August 2010 through August 2011.
  • India was the country with the most explosive Facebook growth from August 2010 through August 2011, with the social network posting an 88 percent market-share increase.
  • Facebook’s market-share increase in the United States for the same period was five percent.

Oracle to debut Sparc server with new T4 chips

A Sparc-based SuperCluster from Oracle
Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison made his fortune with software, but he'll take the stage today to show off the first servers powered by the company's new Sparc T4 processor.
The product, called the Sparc SuperCluster T4-4, is "the first engineered system from a new generation of high-performance Oracle Sparc servers," according to an Oracle invitation to the event . Ellison will share the stage with John Fowler, the systems executive vice president who also led Sun's server group, at Oracle's Redwood Shores, Calif., headquarters.
Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems last year for its server products, including the Sparc processor family and the Solaris version of the Unix operating system. Oracle plans to marry the Sun technology with its own server software for business tasks such as ruining databases of information, managing finance and accounting, and handling customer relations. Clusters link multiple servers in a design geared to accommodate heavier work without the expense of a single server with a higher processor count.
When Oracle was just a software company, it relied on tight ties with hardware makers. Now, though, it's willing to irk erstwhile partners, for example by declaring Intel's Itanium processor dead, ceasing software development for it, and thereby denting HP Itanium server sales.
Oracle's Sparc processors, along with Sparc64 models from ally Fujitsu, compete in the server market with Itanium and IBM's Power family. But x86 chips from Intel and to a lesser extent AMD occupy an ever-larger swath of the server market. Those x86 processors are gradually gaining high-end features once reserved for the server processors that have higher reliability requirements.
Sun's T-series processors began with the T1 "Niagara," evolved to the T2 "Victoria Falls" and T3 "Rainbow Falls." All three of those designs emphasized the ability to perform lots of parallel tasks at once at the expense of executing an individual task as quickly as possible. Not only did the T-series processors push hard with multiple processing engines, called cores, on the same same slice of silicon, they also pushed hard by letting each core executive multiple instruction sequences, called threads.
With the T4, though, Oracle is headed in a more traditional direction: fewer processor cores running at a faster clock speed, according to details the company shared at the Hot Chips conference in August.
"The new Sparc T4 design illustrates the ongoing struggle of processor designers to balance single-thread performance versus throughput on highly threaded code," Linley Group analyst Bob Wheeler. "Reversing Sun's prior direction of increasing the number of threads per processor, Sparc T4 instead prioritizes greater single-thread performance over throughput.The result is a processor with eight CPUs operating at 3.0GHz compared with the T3's 16 CPUs operating at a lowly 1.65GHz."
Each T4 processor core, called S3, can juggle between eight threads. Thus, the overall chip can handle 64 threads.

Google+ users up 30 percent since going public?

After opening its doors to the public last Tuesday, Google+ may now have more than as 43 million users.
So says Ancestry.com co-founder and Google+ unofficial statistician Paul Allen, who's been keeping a running tally of how big the social network is growing.

Compiling his regular series of stats based on surnames used around the world, Allen said last Thursday that Google+ witnessed a 30 percent jump in users in the two days following its official opening to all users on September 20.
In just those two days, the growth rate skyrocketed to that only seen during the first week of the network's "field test" in late June, according to Allen, who's unrelated to the Microsoft co-founder of the same name.
Projecting the figures over the past few weeks, Allen's model came up with 28.7 million users on September 9. Last Thursday morning, that number had swelled to 37.8 million, with most of the growth coming from the prior two days. And accounting for a fudge factor and other elements, he came up with an estimate as of last Thursday of 43.4 million users.
Over the past couple of months, Allen has been busy projecting the ongoing growth of the social network. From 1.7 million users on July 4, about a week after Google+ kicked off, Allen's estimate rose to 4.5 million on July 9, 10 million on July 12, and 18 million on July 20.
Google itself has generally been mum about user counts as its social network has grown, though it did cite 10 million users on July 14, not too far off from Allen's projection at the time.
In response to the latest user estimates, a Google representative told CNET that the company isn't commenting on Allen's statistics and that it hasn't announced any new metrics since July 14.
Despite the ongoing growth in overall users for Google+, a report from Experian Hitwise earlier this month claimed that the number of weekly visits to the service has been dropping since mid-July.

Facebook unfriending 'bug' gets quick fix

Facebook users who were spying on their Timeline to see who had unfriended them in the past will no longer be able to do so.
Late last week, Facebook users discovered that when accessing the social network's new Timeline feature and choosing a year, they could find out which former friends had unfriended them. When viewing their friends list in a particular year, users who saw an "Add Friend" icon next to a person's name knew that that particular user had unfriended them since that time.
As expected, folks who have access to Timeline rushed to the new feature to see who had decided against keeping in contact. Meanwhile, some privacy advocates complained that the feature was a violation of user privacy, since it was made abundantly clear to de-friended people who no longer wanted contact with them. After just a couple days of outcry, Facebook nixed the feature, telling some reporters it had been a bug.

Over the years, Facebook has shied away from allowing users to find out when they're unfriended by a person. That said, it isn't all that difficult to determine. If users sift through their friends list looking for someone who used to be there and now isn't, they're no longer a friend. And when they view that person's profile page, they'll be given the "Add Friend" option.
So, while the Timeline bug was by no means groundbreaking, it was notable, since it made it much easier for folks to determine who had unfriended them.
Timeline was announced last week during Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's keynote address at the F8 conference. The feature, which will be rolled out to the entire Facebook community in the coming weeks, allows users to take a glimpse into their lives on the social network over the years by viewing updates they posted, friends they had, and other content shared with the site. During his address, Zuckerberg said Timeline is "the story of your life."
Facebook did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment on the Timeline fix.

Apple slashes fourth-quarter iPad orders, report says

Did Apple slash iPad shipments in the fourth quarter?

Apple has cut iPad orders from manufacturing partners, Bloomberg is reporting, citing an investment report from JP Morgan Chase.
Apple has reportedly cut fourth-quarter iPad shipments by 25 percent, Bloomberg says, per JP Morgan Chase. The analysts at JP Morgan said that this is the first time they've seen Apple slash iPad shipments since the tablet launched last year.
If Apple has, in fact, cut iPad shipments for the fourth quarter, it will have a profound impact on many of its suppliers, including Hon Hai Precision. According to the analysts, Bloomberg says, Hon Hai was planning to ship 17 million iPads in the fourth quarter, but will now only ship 13 million units.

It's unclear why Apple might want to cut back on iPad shipments, if that is in fact what's happening. Perhaps it ordered too many iPads in previous quarters, or it's slowing down iPad 2 production to prepare for the eventual iPad 3, or there might be other supply chain management and spending issues involved.
What's more, even with those purportedly reduced shipments, analysts aren't ready to say that Apple will sell fewer iPads in the fourth quarter. According to Bloomberg, JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz will maintain estimates that Apple will ship up to 12 million iPad units in that quarter, even with reduced orders to suppliers.
If Apple can keep up its momentum, and sell as many iPads as researchers expect, this could be another big year for the tablet. Last week, research firm Gartner reported that it expects Apple to sell nearly 47 million iPads this year, up from the 14.7 million it sold last year. Even more impressive, Gartner believes Apple will ship nearly 149 million iPads in 2015.
Apple did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment on the Bloomberg report.
